You can join the chat with an external IRC client, and one of the most entertaining of these to use is

Other good IRC client programs are mIRC or PIRCH . Once installed go into the setup options and enter the name of the host chat server "exchange.elc.polyu.edu.hk" ... select and connect up and type in the chat room name. For more instructions see:

Chat pages using the Microsoft Chat ActiveX control

• The first time you load one of these pages it will download the ActiveX control program (if you haven't already installed it
• When the program is ready you will see three windows with a green border
• Make sure you choose a name and chat room then click "Join Chat"
• If you get an error referring to a name or alias click "Cancel Entering Chat" and try another name

This facility requires ActiveX, only fully supported by Microsoft Internet Explorer and AOL. It will not run in Netscape.
