academic writer: paragraphs: backward referring it
Backward referring 'it'
'It' is frequently used to refer backwards in a text. By using pronouns in this way, it is possible to avoid repeating the subject. 'It' can be used to represent quite large amounts of text or ideas. It can therefore bring both variety and economy to your writing.

greater than in the early nineteenth century. Yet even when it
was not, it was more visible, thanks to the
efforts of the new breed of self-made politicians. How and why did this transformation come about? It happened because both the players and the rules on international diplomacy changed. The proportion of family-controlled companies was rising until the early 1990s. It only started to decline with the beginning of the depression. It lies in the nature of an international situation which was escaping the control of any one government. |
