Which sites to link to?
The web is a 'democratic' medium but the quality of work
available varies form site to site. Not all sites have the same credibility in the eyes of
the academic community. If you are wanting to establish your academic credibility (we
assume you do), the quality of your links is vital. For example there is
a big difference between citing a popular newspaper or an academic journal. For a
humourous introduction on the issue of trustworthiness of web citations have a look at Mark Hanen and Bruce Ravelli's '10 Guidelines
for Evaluating Web Pages for Use in Academic Essays'.
All sources do not have equal value! As an academic author, you need to
assess the value of different websites. If you are writing a scholarly paper, you will
want to cite scholarly sources. For a guide to scholarly sources in the
US, have a look at Distinguishing Scholarly Journals from Other
Periodicals at the Cornell library.
If you are making a citation, hyperlinked or not, it goes without saying that they will
have more credibility if they conform to standard citation formats.
