EXAMPLE 1

Computer Assisted Learning: a more efficient path?
In this article the acronym CAL will be frequently used. In its narrow sense it simply means 'Computer Assisted Learning' and is usually used to describe the use of a PC in the learning process. However it also has a wider meaning in terms of 'technology based education'. In this sense CAL can be used as a generic term for all methods of teaching including traditional lectures, text based materials and PC based instruction. It is in this latter generic sense that we will use the term CAL in the following article.

EXAMPLE 2

The measurement of pollution in the inner city
Since 1987, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has been measuring fine-particle air pollution, calling it PM10, which means "particulate matter 10 micrometers or less in diameter." A micrometer is a millionth of a meter. The dot above the letter i in a typical newspaper measures about 400 micrometers in diameter. The Environmental Protection Agency measures PM10 pollution by weight --the total weight of all particles with a diameter of 10 micrometers or less in each cubic meter of air. The legal limit is 50 micrograms of PM10 particles in each cubic meter of air, as a year-round average. Many U.S., Canadian, and European cities from time to time will have as much as 100 to 200 micrograms of PM10 particles in each cubic meter of air.
